Ver página em Português | Ver página en Español San Juan - Parque Nacional San Guillermo
In northern San Juan province, this 170,000 hectare unit lies at the heart of the namesake biosphere reserve (Reserva de la Biosfera San Guillermo). This protected area extends over the southernmost tip of the Puna - South America's highest plateau - which is home to the most numerous herds of camelidae living in the wild, and an invaluable resource of the Central Andes.
San Juan - Reserva Natural Estricta El Leoncito
Created in 1994, this natural reserve aims not only at preserving the indigenous flora typical of the monte (scrub and thorn forest), puna (Andean highlands) and high Andes, but also at protecting the habitat of some endangered species. In the department of Calingasta, southwest San Juan province, this 76,000 hectare unit also harbors historic spots, paleontological sites and areas of archaeological interest, including part of the Camino del Inca (Inca Trail).
