This National Park straddles the departments of Cachi and San Carlos, in the center-west of Salta province.
Between 2,700 and 5,000 meters above sea level, its 65,000 hectares boast beautiful natural samples of dry valleys and mountains. Among the salient features, it is worth mentioning the vegetation, mainly cordon cacti (Trichocereus pasacana), typical of the Prepuna, although there are examples of flora characteristic of the Monte and, on the hilltops, of the Puna and the High Andes.
Salta - Parque Nacional Baritú
Situated in the north-east of Salta province, in the frontier department of Santa Victoria, this unit was created in 1974 to preserve a sector of the Nuboselvas (tropical highland forests), which has remained practically virgin thanks to its impenetrability and its craggy terrain, which made wood exploitation very difficult.
The park is bounded by mountain ranges exceeding 2,000 meters high, such as the Pabas and Cerro Negro.
Salta - Parque Nacional El Rey
This National Park lies in the Department of Anta, Salta province, at about 50 miles (80 km) from the provincial capital. It was founded in 1948 for the purpose of preserving a compelling sector of the Yungas and transitional areas between these highland forests and the Chaco Serrano.
This unit is bounded by mountains that gradually descend to the central valley, forming an awesome huge amphitheater.
