Its name originated in the blaze of the bonfires seen by Ferdinand Magellan in 1520, while exploring this strait, which nowadays bears his name.
Ushuaia, its capital and the southernmost city in the world, has an important port and international airport, recently enlarged so as to be able to cope with busier and busier air traffic.
The Fagnano and Escondido lakes are a must for those who want to appreciate the majesty and quietness of the big lakes within a frame of lenga forests and snow-capped mountains.
