    San Juan

Lying in Tulum Valley, San Juan's namesake capital was practically rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in 1944. Today, it is a modern city full of attractions and located in a mountainous area on San Juan river and close to Embalse de Ullum (Ullum Dam), the core of the region's irrigation system and an important fishing and water sports center.

A prime tourist attraction, designated as a World Heritage Site, the Ischigualasto Provincial Park is also known as Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon). Situated in the east of the province and neighboring La Rioja Province, it is a basin of extraordinary archaeological and paleontological wealth, formed by vast deserts and land formations fashioned by natural agents. This is the richest site in terms of animal fossils and petrified trees.

Other naturally beautiful regions drawing lots of visitors are the Zonda Valley and the San Juan river canyon, on its way to Calingasta.

And adventure tourists may be interested in a fabulous Andean area in northern San Juan, the provincial biosphere reserve named Reserva Provincial y de la Biosfera San Guillermo.
